Around fifty cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Police say they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Officers then discovered multiple other smeared cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say preliminary tests indicate the fluid was most likely human blood.
"Currently there is no indication as to its source; authorities are currently not informed of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to solve the incident" and have requested to the residents for information.
A senior political figure said the vandalism left him stunned and had to be resolved promptly.
"This event affects the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he stated on social media, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a shooter aiming at people of migrant background in February 2020.
