The Tottenham defender scored on two occasions as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run on the road in the Premier League and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before Pape Matar Sarr - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the English top flight.

But the video assistant referee intervened, instructing the match official to check the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off north London rivals and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain 14th and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring midweek display in the European competition against the French side, where they mustered a mere attempts on goal, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it turns out he proved unnecessary in the end.

Defender Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his next goal in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to nod in.

The Dutchman was equally impressive in defensive duties, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it appears the freshness may have worn off somewhat and supporters headed to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised centre-forwards - had netted just a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a damp and dreary evening on in Liverpool.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged the keeper.

The substitute, too, failed to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It wasn't for a shortage of chance. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous crosses into the Spurs box.

Everton: The team head to the Stadium of Light in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.

Spurs: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup match against Newcastle.
