Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever European campaign, Crystal Palace are adapting very quickly. Without key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding result that virtually secures them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their next match against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure direct entry to the last 16, particularly after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for several Palace's fringe players to impress. Christantus Uche, in only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a second, finding the net for the second consecutive match.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season proved outmatched against a largely second-string Palace outfit. The visitors were already weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee problems.
Control Asserted from the Start
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after racing into the area, but the official waved away the protests.
The formerArsenal man didn't need to wait long to find his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's effort had struck the post.
The home side were hanging on desperately. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring with his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still room for development in his game.
A solitary worry for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise perfect night for the traveling side.
